We are honored to host a book signing and art exhibit sale to benefit Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary, a Green Valley, Arizona horse sanctuary that is expanding their mission to rescue abused horses worldwide.

The book signing features prominent photographer, Karen Tweedy-Holmes, whose new book, Horse Sanctuary, includes Equine Voices.

Tweedy-Holmes will be signing copies of her book and offering large framed and unframed photographs of images in the book for sale. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds will be donated directly to Equine Voices to assist in its expansion efforts.

Also present at the show will be equine sculptor Alex Alvis. The sculptor will be revealing new work and a portion of Alvis’ sculpture will be donated to Equine Voices.

“We are grateful to Karen Tweedy-Holmes and Rogoway Gallery for helping us raise awareness of the continued abuse of horses,” says Karen Pomroy, founder of Equine Voices. “These efforts are essential to us as we expand our reach across the globe to help the thousands of horses who are abused and slaughtered as well as those victimized in the illegal drug trade.”

About the book, Horse Sanctuary

With a forward by famed animal behaviorist Dr. Temple Grandin, Horse Sanctuary by photographer Karen Tweedy-Holmes and author Allison Milionis pays tribute to the tireless heroes who devote themselves to equine welfare.

Says Grandin, “Horse Sanctuary is a beautiful book about the relationship between people and horses.”

Horse Sanctuary was a “four-year and 16,000 mile labor of love” for Tweedy-Holmes, who along with author Allison Milionis, documented the important work being done by equine rescue organizations across the United States.

About sculptor Alex Alvis

Fanciful horse sculpture by Alex Alvis; prices start at $3,200

For artist Alex Alvis, horses symbolize the qualities of confidence, strength, courage, freedom, peace, and beauty.  Alvis’ expressionist style renders these magnificent animals in a flowing, fanciful way, imbuing her creations with the same spirit she sees in her living subjects.

Alvis works in paper clay, a delicate medium that allows the sculptor to finely hone the details of her creations.

About Equine Voices

Founded in 2004 by Karen Pomroy, Equine Voices Rescue & Sanctuary is devoted to tackling the world’s severe equine abuse problems.

Equine Voices has recently expanded its mission to a global reach. Whether dealing with the slaughter of horses in Europe, forced urine farming of pregnant mares in Canada, or the use of stolen horses in the illegal drug trade closer to the organization’s home in Green Valley, Arizona, Equine Voices seeks to create changes through awareness and action.

The organization has been granted the prestigious Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries accreditation, a credential bestowed only to those organizations which exhibit fiscal and charitable responsibility.

The show will feature a wine and hors d’oeuvre reception with both artists on Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 1 to 4 pm. The opening coincides with Tubac’s Spring Art Walk, a village-wide art event. Unrestrained Vision will be on display through March 30, 2013.

Work steeped in fantasy

Both artists specialize in work that turns reality upside-down. Dreher creates imagination-based “sacred power places” landscapes and Cullar makes rocks and objects defy the laws of gravity in his stacked-and-balanced bronzes.

We are thrilled to bring these two artists together for a show. Both Albert and Warren create such surreal visions that consistently delight our collectors.

About Albert Dreher

Tucson painter Albert Dreher began his artistic career in the advertising industry, but this Colorado native’s fascination for sacred places of the American Indian led him to transform his career from his world as an advertising designer to that of a fine artist. “As time passed, I had a vision and a growing need to translate that vision through the contemporary arts,” Dreher says.

Dreher’s favorite subjects are the power places of the prehistoric Anasazi Indians, especially the ancient kivas and cliff dwellings he finds hidden in the sacred mountains and mesas of the Southwest. To create his images, Dreher journeys alone to these “places of the soul” to sketch and paint the areas where sacred rituals took place.

About Warren Cullar

After earning his BFA and MFA degrees, Santa Fe/Austin artist Warren Cullar started his art career as an “adventure artist” with scientific expeditions to 36 different countries, including Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, Spain, and Easter Island.

In the early 1990s, Cullar received a large bronze commission and discovered that bronze sculpture was best suited to his nature. “My watercolors are dry in their box at my studio,” Warren says.

Yellowhorse is the matriarch of a family reared in the Navajo jewelry making tradition who specialize in fine handcrafted silver and stone jewelry made in “the Navajo beauty way.”

Yellowhorse prepares all year for her week-long show at our gallery. She arrives with hundreds of brand new necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, including many one-of-a-kind pieces.

“Every year when we come to Tubac we see old friends and meet new ones,” says Yellowhorse. “I make sure to bring my most special work for all the people who come out to see us and the collection.”

What started as a one-time show with Yellowhorse years ago has blossomed into an annual gallery event with hundreds of people turning out each day to meet and visit with the artist.

About Artie Yellowhorse

Yellowhorse was raised on the Navajo reservation and is part of the Towering House Clan. She is a third-generation silversmith, a practice begun by her grandfather, Cuthair Yellowhorse.

Today, Yellowhorse’s two daughters, Desiree and Lei Lani, create and design jewelry with their mother. Other family members also work in the business, including sister Gloria Yellowhorse and nephew Richard Yellowhorse. The family employs skilled Navajo and Pueblo artisans to produce the Yellowhorse Family designs.

Yellowhorse lives in Corrales, New Mexico and is the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren.

Appearance by Yellowhorse coincides with the Tubac Festival of the Arts

We’re holding the Yellowhorse show during the annual Tubac Festival of the Arts, one of the town’s largest events. Visitors from around the country come to Tubac during the festival.

Jeweler Theresa Blanding and sculptor Philonese Baisden will be in our gallery on February 2, 2013

We are happy to announce Earth Inspirations, a two-woman show and sale featuring the talents of Sedona-area artists Theresa Blanding and Philonese Baisden.

The artists will be on hand at the show and reception Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 1 to 4 pm:

• Blanding will be bringing her newest precious gemstone and glass “statement” necklaces.
• Baisden will be exhibiting her three-dimensional wall sculpture made with natural materials sourced from around the globe.

About Theresa Blanding

Theresa Blanding began her career in engineering, having earned two degrees in the discipline. Her natural precision is evident in her perfectly balanced necklace creations—her works feature multiple strands of gemstones, glass beads, metal findings, and wire.

Blanding experimented with necklace design extensively before launching her celebrated collection: Every day while working as a corporate executive, Blanding would wear numerous necklace strands, combining the sizes and textures to form a pleasing palette of color, shape and texture.

After attending art school, Blanding explored painting, bronze casting, textile dying, and mixed media. She began focusing exclusively on wearable jewelry art after moving to Sedona.

About Philonese Baisden

For thirteen years, Philonese Baisden has been creating “Nature Spirits,” in which she combines a three-dimensional style with a strong emphasis on natural textures and colors.

Born in Manhattan and raised in South Georgia, Philonese began to seriously pursue her career as a bas relief painter at the age of 27.

She went from selling her works on the streets in Hollywood to working with Phyliss Morris Interiors in Beverly Hills and from there to numerous galleries across the country starting in the early seventies.

Philonese is a self-taught artist and she brings a special intensity to her work. Working with natural materials from all over the world, she finds that she is driven to blend cultures as she utilizes materials common to the indigenous people of numerous countries including Africa, Indonesia, India, Tibet, and America.

Wackerle will be in the gallery for a show and reception on Saturday, January 19, 2013 from 1 to 5 pm. The artist will meet the public and exhibit never-before-seen works.

Hors d’oeuvres, beer, and wine will be served.

About Fred Wackerle

After a 40-year career as an executive search consultant specializing in CEO succession, Fred Wackerle retired and has spent the last several years living between Chicago and Tucson.

Wackerle, who has been featured in national art publications, specializes in plein air and studio painting, conducting a large amount of his work outside.

His process consists of scouting out a good location—at times hiking at great length—selecting dramatic light conditions, editing the subject matter for composition, and selecting a color palette that achieves a striking impression.

The artist also paints alla prima, a technique that centers on painting quickly. This method allows him to capture fleeting scenes quickly.

Smaller works are brought into his studio for glazing and correct for light and shadow. Larger works, especially cloud abstracts and sunsets, are done in the studio either directly from life observation or memory.

We’re hosting an artist Quick Draw competition as part of our annual Cowboy Christmas party, held in conjunction with the Tubac Territory Gallery.

The events of the day are a way for us to say “thank you” to both our clients and the Tubac community.

About the Quick Draw event and charity auction

Over 20 artists will have only one hour to create a completed work of art for the charity auction to benefit the Tubac Center of the Arts Hi-Art program, which encourages and supports area high school students interested in exploring fine art.

After the allotted time is up, the artists will not be allowed to change their pieces in any way.

Quick Draw is a great way for artists to demonstrate their raw talent: Having a limited amount of time to make a piece creates an exciting kind of art.

Prices for the works will be determined by bids at auction.

Gary Corbett, a professional auctioneer from Colorado, will conduct the sales of the pieces. Gary has been an active auctioneer for 27 years and has personally helped raise millions of dollars for worthy organizations.

About the Hi-Art progam at the Tubac Center of the Arts

Hi-Art is a high school art program that encourages and supports students at Sahuarita, Rio Rico and Nogales high schools. The program reaches families that might not otherwise participate in Tubac Center of the Arts events or even visit Tubac.

The students participate in an annual exhibit; learn how to write a resume, an artist statement, photograph and present their work for display; and also have the ability to sell their work during the exhibit.

Awards are presented to the students and the award winners are selected by an outside juror.

Meet the Artists

We’ll be featuring three sculptors and five painters, each with brand new pieces for sale.

Sculptors

Our three sculptors— Lee Augst, Jerry Harris, and Carol Ruff Franza—represent different aspects of the sculpting world. Each sculptor chose a media that would best convey their ideas.

Lee Augst creates vibrant glass sculpture. His pieces are made of tiny components of glass, which fuse together to form one coherent design.

Jerry Harris, a fourth-generation Arizonan, works with forged steel. He continues the legacy of his great-grandfather and grandfather, both of whom were blacksmiths. His art focuses on the plants, animals, and spirit of the desert.

Carol Ruff Franza works in bronze, creating a variety of different sculptures. She was formally trained at the Atlanta School of Art, the Scottsdale Artist’s School, and many more. In addition to Tubac, Carol’s work is featured in important collections worldwide, including the Georgia governor’s mansion in Atlanta.

Painters

Our five painters are Nance Franklin, Brent Nageli, Esther Rogoway, Michael Swearngin, and Manny Valenzuela.

Nance Franklin’s oil painting technique involves detail and multi-layering to gain depth of color and translucency to the subject matter and to achieve the look of realism. Her subject matter is mainly desert plants.

Brent Nageli focuses on portraying Native American pottery and artifacts, a result of a life-long interest in the Southwest Native Americans. Through his paintings, these ancient treasures live on, and tell a story for everyone to hear.

Esther Rogoway primarily paints figures of horses and people. The forms are easily recognizable, but the nature of each composition demonstrates Esther’s inner imagination.

Michael Swearngin’s oils capture the realities of modern cowboy life, whether a precious moment of relaxation or the energy and motion of working with livestock.

Manny Valenzuela draws influence from the culture of the American West. His style is minimalistic in order to convey emotion without distraction.

An Art Experience ArtWalk: A new venture for Tubac

ArtWalk is a departure from previous Tubac events. Throughout the entire village, tents will be set up for artists to demonstrate their techniques and meet the public. We’re featuring eight.

Art shows with featured artists usually occur inside a gallery, but with ArtWalk, Tubac is combining its natural scenic beauty, amazing host of talented artists, and fans who make the Village possible.

We are thrilled to be a part of Destiny’s book release tour. Destiny unveiled this book in Santa Fe a little over a month ago, with much critical acclaim. Now she will be our guest at the gallery April 21st, reading from her book and signing copies for attendees.

About the book, Shaping Destiny

Without giving too much away, Shaping Destiny is the story of how Destiny Allison came to be the renowned artist she is today.

It describes her trials and tribulations along the path of finding herself through her art. In her focused, cathartic moments of sculpting she would discover things about herself she had not known previously.

Shaping Destiny is also a story of perseverance. Never having been “formally” trained by an art institution, Destiny acquired all her sculpting knowledge through forceful exploration and pursuing experts in the field. Her success today provides proof for the methods and techniques she describes in the pages of this story.

This book is more than just a memoir. Every chapter also offers a concrete art lesson to educate the reader as well as entertain. This format allows the book to not only be an enthralling story, but also maintain its educational purposes.

About the April 21^st event at our gallery

Destiny will be in our Tubac gallery showroom at 4pm on Saturday, April 21^st. She will be reading excerpts from her book, followed by a discussion and Q&A. Her visit is a great opportunity for you to directly interface with an established artist and an up-and-coming author.

If you already have a copy of the book, bring it so you can get it signed!

After the discussion and signing, there will be a wine and cheese reception held at the gallery. The artist will be on hand to discuss the new sculpture we will have for sale.

About the artist

Destiny Allison has been working with bronze, stone, and steel for the past 18 years.

She is a native of Santa Fe, New Mexico.  As a young adult, Destiny lived and studied in Washington, D.C. and Boston, returning  to Santa Fe in 1998.

Destiny first fell in love with sculpting while playing with her son’s modeling clay during a moment of writer’s block and domestic frustration — an important moment described in Shaping Destiny.
